Well, what do you guys think? I think they should both keep their jobs. For the sheer reason that who else are you going to get that is better? Maybe they could just switch jobs.
Well, it was a sour loss. But at the very least my pick to win the west, New Orleans, is still in it. Be warned, SA Boys, these Hornets can play ball. Much love to B.Bass for leaving it all on the floor...
Oh, and thanks for all the May header submissions... I received ZERO.

I think that both will be let go. Maybe an outside chance D'Antoni stays, but Avery definitively needs to go.
Both teams are in rough shape after their trades. I understand the Suns somewhat in that Marion said he would not resign, so at least get something for him, but now they will be forced into a new style of basketball which will likely require a new coach.
I think D'Antoni could be a nice look with the Bulls utilizing his wide open offense?
Avery has had a nice team for several years and only gone down hill with it. He's a good person, but not a head coach of an NBA team.
SA is good...I have watched them play a couple of times now and as boring as it is...damn....they just do it
My Thoughts,
L
I think the early exit of these two teams is not a reflection of either of these great coaches, but of foolish organizations.
The Shaq and Kidd moves were flops. Disasters really. Two aging players who's styles of play are incongruous with the style of play that has Succeeded over the past 4-5 years.
I think the teams that make the intelligent moves (Lakers, Spurs, Hornets) assure that the core of a successful team is not disrupted by adding contributing, role players, and not name brand stars (with the exception of the Pau Gasol robbery).
I think Avery is an oustanding coach with a Bowner for and Owner. I'll show my ignorance by asking `Who is the GM of the Mavs?'
Because when you disrupt a team that took you to the Finals and won 67 games in the previous two seasons, KEEP THAT SHIT TOGETHER. Add small. Keep core.
Oh, and don't blame the coaches for dumb organizational moves. Just because the Lakers made a big move, doesn't mean you have to destroy everything you put in place for 5 seasons to keep up with them.
Williams, I cant believe Im saying this but I absolutly 100% agree with you.
When Dallas traded Harris and Diop, I said "This is great!, now the Mavs aren't nearly as built to beat the Spurs w/o the quickness of Harris to defend Parker and the strength of Diop on Duncan." Plus, we already saw Tony humiliate Jason Kidd in the 2003 Finals, so I wasnt too concerned about that match-up.
When Phoenix made the trade for Shaq I said, "Holy crap, the Suns who were at the verge of beating us last year because of their style of play and speed just got a HELL of a lot SLOWER. Stever Kerr is an IDIOT GM! HAHAHAHA". 2 months later, Spurs 4 Suns 1.
BREAKING NEWS!!! Avery Johnson has been fired from the Dallas Mavericks. Rumors in SA are already circulating that he will be hired as an assistant for the Spurs until Pop retires and will preceed in the footsteps to begin a new Spurs Dynasty in the 2010's. I love Avery, great coach. Some say we won the '99 Championship because of his leadership. Sorry Faust & Chambers, I think your idiot owner Mark Cuban has really fucked up your team.
Go Spurs Go
I want D'Antoni and Devin Harris.
By the way Faust, I have a June header and doesn't involve anyone from the IC directly but it does involve Mueller's shirt.
What saddens me is that Cuban is marketer. Annointed owner from financial merit, NOT basketball prowess. When it seemed his product (Mavs) were primed to reap the benefits of his investments, all was good. But they fell two games short. Then they won 67 games, and fell short. This year, in lieu of the moves of competitors, it seemed a `Business' man felt obligated to match them, to keep up-with-the-Joneses.
That's ego masking a lack of confidence. A lack of faith in what was created over the past 4 seasons.
My point is that when success is found in the NBA, and I mean real, made-it-to-the-finals-actually-beat-the-Spurs success, then hang on to it. Let it marinate. If it teeters some, have faith that it will sort it self out, and maybe make some minor tweeks. Don't commit suicide when things are slightly awry.
I'm just disgusted to think of the Mavs considering blowing up something that didn't even reach its apex, nor come close to crystalization/stale product.
But impatience killed it. And now Avery's gone. How sad.
I've always been a Mavs wishy-washy fan and, for a time, tried to claim Spurs. Truth is, I like the teams who's management and moves I respect for knowledge of basketball and integrity.
Sometimes I wonder if the Mavs have much of either.
While much of what you said is true, Adam, the Mavs are certainly not alone in the impatience factor. That is just about what every team does but the NBA champs. And the truth is this team is getting older. They have done worse each year since the Finals debacle. Though I disagree that Avery should be gone, I do wonder if this team is in a funk that it can not recover from. And new life may be the only solution. They put a heck of a cast around Dirk and made a nice run, but like many teams before them they just couldn't climb the mountain. Before Dirk gets to the twilight of his career I'd like to see some new blood around him to see if they have one run left in them.
As for Lubahn saying Avery is "just not an NBA coach" That was just silly. Yes, he inherited a good team, but so did Phil Jackson. The guy was the fastest in NBA History to 100 wins and won NBA coach of the year. That was an inaccurate and ill-informed comment.
thats the world we live in. what have you done for me lately. no patience, success now or be slaughtered. i mean the guy was a fucking day trader for christ sake. he's got the patience of a hummingbird. this is one of the reasons he's been so successful in the past. i don't think it transfers over to running a basketball team.
the players won all those games in the regular season and their coach lost the finals in my opinion. on paper they were a top 3 team, intangibles & coaching we're holding them back. i mean avery fucking changed his 67 win starting line up in game one of the playoffs against an 8 seed. he wasn't coaching to win he was coaching to not lose. he might be a great motivator & leader on the court but he couldn't get the job done. i agree more with letting avery go than i do with the kidd trade. he's a good coach but not a great one. yet
while lubahn's comment was poopy, D'antwatty & avery have been out coached the last three years. and when i say years i mean the playoffs. the playoffs are where great coaches are validated as great coaches. playing the same team seven games in a row, you know what the other team is going to run. you know all their sets on both offense and defense. there are no secrets. it's about executing and adjustments with both of those responsibilities resting solely on the coaches shoulders. i watched maybe 5 minutes of the mavs N.O. series so i can't comment on details there but as the series progressed in the SA suns series Popovich bent D'antoni over and made him his bitch. basically popovich was coaching phoenix with the adjustments he made. he put an undersized man on diaw and dared d'antoni to run his offense through him. which he gladly did and completely disrupted the flow for phoenix by taking the ball outta their point guards hands. hacka shaq, same thing no flow for phoenix at all. he took them out of their game. he took the pick-n-roll away from them (as best as one can) and then in turn pick-n-rolled shaq and nash to death on the other end. shaq at the top of the key and amare is left to protect the basket, brilliant. defensively d'antoni had nothing to fire back with. he's a one-sided one trick pony and was exposed year-after-year. popovich was basically running d'antoni's offense & it was magical. that's a great coach. while athleticism and match ups can be aberrations and prevail in determining a series, over the long run when looking at the top six teams in the playoffs it comes down to coaching.
I stand by my statement that I personally do not see Avery ever being a great head coach and would be very comfortable coming back to this post in 5 yrs.
I think Mazur had some great comments regarding coaching, which is obviously why we think he could be a great Team USA Softball coach.
