Jewel

This is a confession. I heard this song this morning and it reminded me of being 14 and staying up to watch VH1 hour upon hour for this video to play, I even had the cd. This morning, I almost downloaded it on iTunes.

I know you'll watch it all the way through, and if you're alone, you will turn up the speakers. Just click play, I dare you.

I do not have a similar history with this song. At all.

The Bear said...

Liar.

Let it out, come on Butz. Itll make you feel good inside to release that inner liking to songs that might make us question our manhood.

Jewel was fucking hot, no denying that at all!

Butz said...

No, I honestly cannot say I have any connection to this song. I question my manhood enough without having to listen to terrible music.

On that subject, who has the worst taste in music on this blog? I believe this has been discussed at least a bit in the past, but I would like to see a ranking and whatg type of music that person listens to.

BDub_210 said...

Kevin, did Katie hack into your account? Is this some sort of joke?

Nicki, Clint listens to the Blade soundtrack on loop. True story.

Adam said...

Kevin.

This post stunned me.

Never did I like this song, never did I find myself attracted to Jewel. Never did I think you would confess to such a thing, but man am I glad you did.

One video I craved as an awkward early teen was the Janet Jackson song "Any time, any place".

It came out at that moment when you start wanting to touch girls and only confirmed that I had to do it, and had to do it soon.

I also think it shaped my lifelong attraction to black women.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bkn1-UWvGzQ

As a whole, the IC music preferences are broad and usually pretty good.

The Bear said...

Williams, I remember that song and I remember thinking wow Janet is hot but song was way too terrible and slow.

Jewel was new, young, lived in a van in Alaska, didnt have perfect teeth, and had a awesome voice with some catching hits.

Id say that most would like my taste of music, except Faust of course. Faust hates everybody's taste of music except for his. And when you start to like a band he likes, he wont like it anymore.

Adam said...

"Catching hits"?

Are you trying to sell me on Jewel? If I didn't think she was hot when I was 13, when I thought Nermal from Garfield was hot, she's off my attractiveness meter.

Speaking of music, I downloaded the new Drake album "Thank Me Later" last night. Anyone heard this yet?

Too soon to make judgements but my first observation is: Rap needs to stop with the F'ING VOICE MODULATOR. So damn dumb. Ruins songs. Not singing.

The Bear said...

Sorry I dont tend to usually proof my comments, I bet you know what I meant though! Just like I bet you can figue out what I meant when I said "tend to usually" or "figue".

Jewel was hot because she was simple, she can yodel, she grew up without indoor plumming, and was discovered by Flea.

Just found this video of Jewel undercover at a karaoke bar, pretty funny. Tell me you dont think she is hot now -

http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/4a87d48fdd/undercover-karaoke-with-jewel

Adam said...

I wasn't commenting on your inappropriate use of grammar, I was referring to your deeming of Jewel's songs as "Catching hits"?

"...had a awesome voice with some catching hits."

I just watched the funnyordie bit. It's funny.

Jewel is cute. Still not hot. Never.

L said...

No Jewel is not attractive no matter how many videos you post Kevin, sorry buddy.

The only video I remember waiting to see was TLC "Creep" because even a .7 second possible boob flash was money.

Nicolas, be careful walking down the music train on the blog. The taste is diverse and as a whole good, but there are music snobs lurking....and not just Faust!

Personally, I like country, Bob Dylanesque artists and hard rap. I would not choose to listen to Indie Rock.

And I love Fiona Apple

Adam said...

T-Boz was tough, but Chili was just brown sugar sexy.

The song "Shoop" also characterized a strange hormonal period for me.

We should play "Good Music/Bad Music". Name a band/performer, and rate them "good" or "bad".

1. Steely Dan

AW Vote: Bad. Very Bad.

Butz said...

Did anyone else have the music television channel "The Box" growing up? They played some raunchy videos on that channel and this is where I developed an attraction similar to Williams'.

Steely Dan is upsetting. "Reelin' In The Years" is angering.

The Bear said...

Good call on Fiona, she was NOT hot (in fact, kind of scary) but has a sexy voice.

Jewel DOES have catchy hits. Oh and did I mention she is hot/cute/likeable, etc? She almost get naked in You Were Meant For Me, thats a good video too but the song isnt as good as the above.

Im with you on Bob Dylan,

Texas Country sits good with me, Pink Floyd will live on for centuries, and Zeppelin fucking rules.

The Bear said...

Steely Dan does suck

Butz said...

I thought of one for me. Lisa Loeb and the tune "Stay". I would have problably stalked her if I knew how to do that as a teenager.

Butz said...

Also, I really feel like Bob Dylan is terrible. I feel very strongly about this as well, though I may be in the minority. I realize he had some large contributions to music, but I cannot listen to his bullshit.

AW - the new Drake album is amazing. Autotune is fine in moderation. It sounds good.

I like this song. Not a big fan of the band, but this song is good.

BDub_210 said...

Here is my confession:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4CRkpBGQzU

still a good song. loved it in Vanilla Sky.

Butz said...

Holy shit, Weiss. Really?

The Bear said...

Ill never forget that absurd nose ring, just ridiculous!

Great call on Lisa Loeb Butz, I just watched the entire video and am thinking about watching it again.

Adam said...

Butz's music preferences:

* Hates Bob Dylan

* Approves of Autotone

Butz, your music tastes are on extremely thin ice. If not for your Lisa Loeb mention, you might be ranked 11th in IC music taste.

BDub_210 said...

Here's another one that no matter how hard I tried to like them, they still continue to tour Bonaroo and play for the hippee masses.

The String Cheese Incident
Phish

I hate them both equally.

BDub_210 said...

BTW, this is the livest comment thread in history of the blog. I can barely keep up with the new comments. Way to get it off and poppin' with Jewel Bear.

Butz said...

You cannot tell me you flip on Bob Dylan's "Hurricane" and think "this is a great tune. I am enjoying this." I simply will not believe that.

Autotune is part of rap culture at this point. You take it for what it is.

I have a wide variety of music like and dislikes.

Adam said...

Bravo.

Adding to that list:

Cross Canadian Ragweed.

I've never met anyone who is sure why they like them. A bunch of people liking a bad band because their friends told them too.

Butz said...

I cant get into the String Cheese Incident, though I have tried. I liked Phish in high school and they have some songs that are decent. I believe "Bouncing 'Round The Room" was one of their tracks that is enjoyable?

The Bear said...

I hate the Eagles. Please shoot me if I ever hear Hotel Crap or Desperado again.

Im going to watch my Jewel video again, especially now that I am the only one in the office.

Adam said...

I love this thread.

Butz got mad.

Hurricane isn't very good, no. But 79% of his 642 other songs are great.

Dylan does not have a good voice. Given. But read his lyrics. Poems.

Good, fun Dylan:
Man in Me (amazing)
Like a Rolling Stone

Listen to those, refute if desired.

Butz said...

I concur with the "new" CCR comment. I equate them to OAR. At some point, some person in college liked the band and everyone else followed. They are simply not good.

Adam said...

OAR and CCR are the same band.

That crazy game of poker lasted 4 years too many.

Butz said...

We should talk about Dylan as a poet then and not a musician.

Spoon. I dont like Spoon at all.

Adam said...

Im kidding, they are not the same band. Just equal in shittiness.

The Bear said...

Weiss was the first person to listen to OAR in college, I swear. Same with Dispatch.

Butz said...

Claiming to be the first person to have done anything without documentation is audacious. I hate that.

Adam said...

It's not as bad as double posting.

I kid.

You are right. "The first person" thing is so self-satisfying.

The first person to ever hear an indie band play was their parents while they practiced in the garage. I've never heard a kid's parent brag about that fact in a trendy bar.

Michael said...

i second the butz dylan comment. i believe lubahn & I had some back and forth on this subject on this very blog....which is on fire right now.

The Bear said...

Ok, it seemed like Weiss played OAR and Dispatch very early 2nd semester of our freshman year. Then Miller borrowed Dispatch, and before we knew it, the entire campus was singing "Take a shower and shine your shoes, you got no time to lose.."

The Bear said...

Weiss got the cd from Dispatch themselves while at a Dave concert, sure seemed like the first. SEEMED SEEMED SEEMED

Butz said...

I tried to delete my double comment and deleted the wrong. Then, i deleted the correct duplicate. I am a complete fuck up.

Butz said...

I am pretty sure OAR was playing concerts in Dayton, Ohio in 1982.

Dispatch is a joke to me.

BDub_210 said...

Please use the abbreviation CCR when referring to Credence Clearwater Revival and not some shit band that Sturdavent used to get backstage passes to at the AARDVARK. Also,CCR as in Credence is a great band. In other news, Brent Wood is playing a shitty dive bar in SA. Gotta jet to make the opening set.

"Plugs for nugs?"-AB aka the weird guy that used to invite himself over to the Lubbock house and whom Williams once had a fondness for. That guy listened to a fuckload of shitty hippie folk music. He used to try to trade nugs of marijuana for live music recordings from the sound guys.

The Bear said...

Who will saaaaave your soul, when it comes to the powers now. ladeledadeledada.

Another day, another dollar, anothe war, another tower went up where the homeless had their homes.

Brillant.

What is NOT sexy about this video? She's playing acoustic guitar in a men's bathroom with a crackhead in one stall, hot love scene in another, some trannys, and random 10 year boy walking around.

She was 19 when this came out. It's cute when she points her feet together.

Butz said...

You got my attention at "10 year old boy"

L said...

CCR should only be used for Credence Clearwater Revival....they are great!

Bob Dylan is greatness, Hurriance is good but overly loved by the masses

Michael said...

if williams had his way he would have lived with AB at some juncture.

The Bear said...

Credence is the ONLY CCR I know and I am appalled to find out there is another band calling themselves CCR?!

Its 5:00 and I dont want to leave work because I want to listen to more Jewel and hit refresh on the IC blog. This is outstanding.

Eagles still suck

Adam said...

Dude, stop with the Jewel.

I do have Save you Soul in my Head, however.

Still not hot.

That guy Ab was worse than Cody Kilpfel. Just terrible human. Ugly inside and out.

I liked Spoon.

Anyone listen to Muse? I once thought they were good. They suck penis. Ever song is the same.

Penis suckers.

Faust said...

Am I in the right place? It looks like our blog, but the 44 comments really threw me off... Butz is an aid.

BEAR IS 100% CORRECT. Jewel is crazy sexy. This song is money, and I am thoroughly confused with all of you naysayers.

I also hate all jam bands.

**WARNING** music snob comment below:

Has anyone listen to the band "Why?" Truly original lyrics and style at work here.

The Bear said...

Try this, super hot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGj77BrEgj4

Turn up your headphones

Adam said...

Get out of here Faust.

I listened to Why like four years ago. Someone gave me the Elephant Eyelash album.

So I guess I'm cooler than you.

Please only refer to bands that everyone most likely knows. Obscurity will put out the blog fire.

The Bear said...

Faust, I dont know why, but I KNEW you would have my back on this.

Butz said...

You are right with Muse. All sounds the same. I really dislike Spoon.

I have Why? "The Hollows" on my iPod. Pretty good stuff.

I dont think asking if anyone has heard a band is snobbish. You are snobbish, but I dont think your comment was. I dont think it deserved a warning is what I am getting at.

marcspoke said...

not sure why kevin addressed and defended jewel. is this really you? or do your wife or one her wife mafia have access to all your belong? not that that's a bad thing, but we can't haves charades in this format... i claim responsibility for the o a r frenzy, it was radical and hip. i haven't really thought rationally in this 50+ post pandemonium since weiss' comment about identity theft.

Butz said...

Faust, do you feel like Williams just pooped on you? I am asking because that is what it looks like. I am just curious if it feels that way?

Faust said...

No, it was intended to be tongue-in-cheek. Anything I say about music with this group is met with some disdain. Ever since I blew up Williams when he admitted to liking Snow Patrol.

I'm not a snob. I'm snobbish.

marcspoke said...

disco is back.

Butz said...

Snow Patrol is pretty bad.

Do you feel like Williams peed on you?

BDub_210 said...

Miller claiming responsibility for the OAR frenzy that WAS....now that's rich (see But'z comment on claiming to be the first person w/o documentation). Also,if you are going to chime in on a 50+ message post, please read all previous posts as to prevent repetition. Thanks chief.

Faust said...

No, I don't think Williams peed or pooped on me.

The Bear said...

"I saw a movie and it wasn't the same because it was happy and I was sad and it made me miss you o so bad"

The Bear said...

There we go

Butz said...

I would rather someone deliver a spinning back kick to my face than call me chief.

Well played, Weiss.

Butz said...

Faust, do you feel like Williams spat upon your face?

BDub_210 said...

What are the odds we reach 100 comments on this post by midnight? I am willing to bet that if that occurs, no contributions will be made by Chambers or Lee. What I can picture Chambers listening to on the way to work: Godsmack, Paul Van Dyke, and that song Kryptonite in said order.

BDub_210 said...

What's worse? Chief, Guy or Buddy?

Butz said...

Weiss, are you referring to the song Kryptonote by 3 Doors Down?

Butz said...

Chief, Guy, and Buddy in that order. Chief is grounds for assault.

BDub_210 said...

That is correct. That song makes me want to end it all.

Can we put together a worst songs ever playlist? Maybe we could play it at our next reunion and observe the reactions of terrible music by our significant others (in my case Gino)...

The Bear said...

Chambers really liked that Carrie Underwood song 2 years ago when we were on our way to the lake, Before He Cheats I think is the title. We were blasting it in his monster truck

Butz said...

Weiss, that is a great idea. I would like to compile and play at the first tailgate during TCU football just to watch the reactions of passersby.

BDub_210 said...

Fuck yes, this is brilliant. We need to blast said mixtape at the TCU tailgate. To save time, should we just have Chambers bring a dated CD mix? I think everyone's could contribute at least 2 of their most hated songs of all time (I'm going to stick to the 97' - 2002 era).

marcspoke said...

brilliant til two dudes stop stroking each other off. yeah a preposition.

The Bear said...

That was a terrible era for music.

Butz said...

I need a Miller translation, please.

marcspoke said...

when did you first experience jewel? was it cosmic?

Adam said...

Wow. 15 minute walk from work to home. In that time frame, 22 new comments were posted.

As I walked home, I lamented me harsh commentary directed at Adam Faust. I felt like I took an unnecessary poop on him. Sorry for peeing on you spitface.

I have to go travel Costa Rica now. I feel like the 100 mark could be reached tonight, though its only Butz and Weiss left. I believe in you.

I love the blog.

Due to the comment accumulation, Jewel has gotten hotter.

Not yet hot, however.

Recently met a guy who didn't like Metallica in middle school. Was that possible?

When filled with hormone angst, I liked to pretend I was tough in my room and listen to For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Adam said...

Make that 27 comments, with Bear and Miller now involved.

Sorry.

Adam said...

This is better than 3-way calling.

Butz said...

Williams, tell me where you are traveling in Costa Rica, so I can be mad at my life.

I am boarding a plane in 10 minutes, so I will be signing off soon.

That being said, please read all comments and don't make stupid, angst ridden for whom the bell tolls comments b/c you were called out on an earlier post. Thanks pal.

BDub_210 said...

We get it. You're from Austin....er outside of Austin and you are a music snob.

I'm going to start the playlist idea with the first track to get the next IC tailgate jumping:

Track #1 - Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch "Good Vibrations"
Track #2 - 3 Doors Down "Kryptonite" (C-Bone will appreciate this)
Track #3 - The Eagles "Hotel California" (For Bear)
Track #4 - ?

*side note to music snobs; you should be able to contribute to this list due to all the shitty music you have had to endure to find the good, choice nugs in your eclectic music library.

Michael said...

weiss, please don't stop.

#4 Crazytown - Butterfly

also, it's been established that chambers favorite band is Indigo Girls.

marcspoke said...

5=the seed, the roots

BDub_210 said...

Miller, you obviously don't get it. That song you just suggested we add to the terrible music playlist is actually a very good song. Mazur's song suggestion was perfect. From this point on, I am going to ask that we as a group simply ignore any additional comments Miller so inaptly chimes in with.

Back to Crazytown. Mazurino, did you ever see the lead singer of that group on Celebrity rehab? Dude was a certified crack head. I'm also quite sure he grew up in Hollywood or Bel Air. Irony.

Despite the fact that I love the following song, I feel it would turn heads at any tailgate/reunion event.

Scorpions - "Wind of Change"

The Bear said...

Crazytown is perfect, excellent call Mazur. That is one of the worst songs EVER!

Weiss don't put Scorpions in that category, they were a solid 80s band.

How about any song by Sugar Ray as #5?

Epic day on the blog, goodnight IC

BDub_210 said...

On second thought, Scorpions should be excluded. Gracias Kevin. Great minds think alike. Any Creed and Nickelback songs would be good...I gladly know the titles to none of their work.

marcspoke said...

so, this is a playlist of two or three peeps idea of shit music?

BDub_210 said...

No, everyone is encouraged to contribute. I just thought it would be funny, since we were on the topic of bad music, to make a shitty playlist and play it the next time we get together (run on sentence).

Butz than suggested we play it at a TCU tailgate to watch the reaction of passer bys. Everyone is encouraged to contribute to said playlist.

Peace be with you Marc.

Michael said...

so the crackhead from crazy town is a Mazur. Bret Mazur aka Epic Mazur is an American rapper/record producer and a co-founder of Crazy Town. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_Mazur

Well he really has just fucked the family name. what an asshole.

Uncle Kracker - Follow Me
This song make me want to paper cut my eye ball.

Faust said...

I just read the last 35 comments. Here are some observations.

• Weiss, lay off of MIller.
• I love that Bear hates the Eagles
• Butz had a good idea

I would like to offer up, Limp Bizkit, "Nookie"

I imagine us all sitting around Mazurs truck as Dr. Durst repetitively belts out,
"I did it all for the nookie so you could take that cookie and stick it up your WAA!"

All Will Smith movies are pretty bad, especially the ones in which he saves the world, which is almost every one.

How many worlds can one black man save??

Indpendence Day - Smith saves world
I am Legend - Smith saves world, even when no one is left on it
I, Robot - Smith saves world, in the future
Men In Black - Smith saves world from Aliens
Hancock - Never saw it, but am pretty sure Smith was a super hero who saved the world, or at least NY
Bad Boys - Smith saves Miami
Bad Boys 2- Smith again saves Miami, though with more explosions
Pursuit of Happiness - Smith saves son from poverty
Fletch - Smith saves men from women

Come back to this post in three years and see how many of these have been sequelled or triolog-ied.

Truth is, I like Will Smith and loved Fresh Prince. It was funny. Too bad he's allowed his career to mold him into a one trick pony that only knows how to play the role of Johnny World Saver. I'd love to see him play the role as a killer. Maybe in a movie where he killed Uncle Phil and Carlton. Now that would be a good movie!

Also, Men In Black the song should also make the album.
