The Social Network
(four months behind)
People always ask "what do you miss from the U.S?" Aside from family, friends, black people and respect for punctuality, materialistically (artistically), I really miss movies. Good, indie, foreign or mainstream, well-directed, well-acted, important, movies.

And tonight, I went to the premier of The Social Network. Now, for the next 48 hours I can thumb my nose at uninformed Costa Rican populace who are yet to see the movie, for I, an esteemed member of the national media, was granted access to the VIP Sneak Peek screening of the four month old movie.

Back in September, when this movie was released, I read a story about it in the New Yorker. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/09/20/100920fa_fact_vargas

It made me not want to see the movie. Why? The writer of the book that this movie was based on "The Accidental Billionaires", never met nor interviewed Mark Zuckerberg. Neither did the screen-writer Alan Sorkin. The sources used for the book and movie were people who visciously loathed Zuckerberg and were suing him for millions.
Imagine if I met with everyone of Lee Portillo's worst enemies and then wrote a book about Lee Portillo based on what they said. Then, another guy who'd never met Lee Portillo, distorted my already distorted book and made a movie out of it. And then 47 million people saw it, and 46.85 million believed it.

Before I Rooney-rant again, this movie was great. Great dialogue, direction, acting, music. Well done.

Too bad it's most likely a fabricated sham.

There doesn't seem to be much concern for the source of information anymore. See it, hear it, read it, believe it.

i dont think sorkin just winged it on the script. ben mezrich wrote the book(mit blackjack wunderkind). i'd be willing to bet, just a shot in the dark here, that mezrich did know a few of the bawstan clowns, that he did his hmwk. before this slice of reality, did you know that justin timberlake invented napster(remember using that in college?)? i didnt.

next time, why dont you do a little background work before you sloppily critique a film four months late.

facebook=50bn $ company... wtf?

this blog is all the facefucking i can handle.

1986 called, they want costa rica back.

It's not a documentary- it's a movie. But, people will believe it even though, like all Hollywood biopics, it is sensationalized.

I think smart people get that and dumb ones don't.

If I was going to make a movie about someone, I'd at least hope to get an interview with the dude.

I wouldn't ever feel comfortable writing a story about someone I never met. I'd feel irresponsible.

The basic story is true, but there are a lot of fabrications. The Winklevoss's are fact. The girl that he loves/misses is false. (Zuckerberg said in a recent 60 Minutes interview that he has had the same girlfriend since high school?!) But like Faust said, it's a movie based on a true story, not a documentary.

Anyway you want to tell it though, Mark Zuckerberg's story is pretty incredible.

P.S. Miller and I joined TheFacebook in it's very early stages... back then it was acceptable for TCU girls would put their living information on their profile page (i.e. Colby 225). WTF, are you kidding me?!

I remember you showing me TheFacebook in your Stonegate Apt. I remember telling you "This is f'ing scary", particularly with the dorm room #s listed.

We live our lives on the interweb. Every piece of data about us can probably be found in here somewhere.

Nope, sorry BDub. It was actually Metcalf who first told me to sign up. I do remember you were on it, and when I signed up you told me that Maziel used to "poke" girls which was code for hook up.

faust, nobody said anything about documentary. documentary insinuates the actual person being documented? i dont anything about hollywood biopsies. are they cancerous?

adub, if you interview the person youre biopsying youre likely to introduce bias. as such it is always avoided in hollywood. no one interviewed arnold before the terminator documentaries, they just threw his austrian ass to wolves and spectators.

kev, remember when you signed me up for facebook, and then proceeded to own my account for several weeks? that was the catalyst for me not participating in digital social media.

adub, youre correct about our info on the interweb, and you just set yourself up for:

adub, you cant just skip two years. the time continuum must be continuous. cant wait til we get to the present.

bdub, years... time is the only thing you cant get back, ive tried. doc brown wont take my 5 bucks.

all, arent trebuchets awesome?

Marc, I never "owned" your account, you created and managed that on your own. You Facebooked for AT LEAST 1 year, dont be ashamed.

Thats a flat out lie. You had some weird bear or something as your profile pic

marcspoke said...

nope. obscene pic of tabitha giving me mock blowjob. you put the pic up. broke my heart.

If I wrote the story about Marc Miller's Facebook history and only interviewed Kevin Dalrymple, would I be portraying the true story Marc?

Wood eye?

I'm going to try to track the activity on your account and write a movie about it called Facial Discrimination.

Punzilla.

kevin is obviously "no faced man."

i do like puns. they're a large portion of what we(me) got here in this written word forum hub blog. what would you rather have: my puns, adub rants, or bdub assault?

i think you(the proverbial you) should write a history of marcspoke; though i think im the only one that'd read it. large portions of my memory are gone, so i an accurate assessment. one only an ethical unbiased journalist could deliver.

i dew remember kevin owning my facedbook page for a bit, i didn't care at the time. but when i ran into an ex from high school that asked me about it, i had to claim it back.

I have no desire to see this movie, nor do I care about Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook is dumb. Does it make me cool that I have never joined Facebook? I think it does.

PUN ALERT: I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. It's impossible to put down.

What the fuck is everyone talking about?

I am about to join MySpace.

Tell me when you screen Death Race II.
