Man I love Central America

Nicaragua would welcome Libya's Gaddafi: Presidential aide

Nicaragua would offer political asylum to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, though no asylum request has been made, an aide to the Central American country's president said on Tuesday.

'If someone were to request asylum we would have to give a positive answer because (Nicaraguan) people were granted asylum when people were being murdered by (Nicaragua's Anasatasio) Somoza dictatorship,' Bayardo Arce, President Daniel Ortega's adviser for economic affairs, told reporters.

Mr Arce did not mention the Libyan leader by name, and said it was not clear how Gaddafi might be moved to Nicaragua in a theoretical asylum request because Managua does not have an embassy in Tripoli.

Local media have speculated Gaddafi might consider exile in Nicaragua because Mr Ortega has been a vocal supporter of the Libyan leader, recently calling him a 'brother' and 'friend.' Mr Ortega once was a leftist rebel who fought against the Somoza dictatorship, which ended in 1979.

Football is here.  To make the upcoming season more interesting I would like every one to make one bold prediction for the upcoming season.  Mine: The Houston Texans will be in the AFC Championship.

Texas Monthly is excellent.

Here are some highlights from their Top 20 Reasons Why they Love College Football.

Reason#1: The fans (obligated)

Reason #2: Gary Patterson is still yelling at his players.

Reason#7: Snappy Dressing TCU Fans

It also settles a years long battle I have had with Kevin Dalrymple about how our mighty toad would do in a real fight. Spoiler Alert: Not well.

Feel the Shock!

This song is pretty popular in my region of the 2nd and a half world. One night at Karaoke, my friend saw the following video and sat there, mouth agape, stunned at what he was watching.

Since that night, this has become my new favorite dance. Also, "Siente el choque" translates to "feel the shock" or "feel the collision". Enjoy.

A little help from my friends

    Dear friends,

Where are you? Why don't I know? Why do I feel obligated to write this post at 10:20 at night and add a Joe Cocker video as a plea, not to get "activity" on our blog, but to actually hear from you so that I have some sort of knowledge of what you are doing and who you are becoming?

Truth is, this is the place where I hope to get a little help from my friends. This is our "social network" that we don't have to share with 321 meaningless acquaintances that give you a "like this" thumbs up when you publicly post something inane about how you hate watery oatmeal.

Sort of tired of coming to this blog with my 10 best friends in the world and crossing my fingers that there will be a new comment.

So I ask, where are you? Where is Brown, where is Chambers, where is Butz, where is Mazur, where is Weiss, where is Lubahn, where o where is Portillo?

I'd really like to know what is happening in the world of my friends. We see each other 6 days a year (maybe) and, for me, this is the tool I use to keep up with everyone. I feel like if we let it die, we'll slowly become strangers and see each other at Miller's bachelor party in seven years and talk about how we used to be friends, or spend most of the time trying to wade through the disappointing awkwardness of the reality that we actually don't have a clue about who each other has become.

We have careers, kids, mortgages, debts and vices, but if they consume all of our time, then I feel like we're choosing them instead of choosing friends. If that is the choice, so be it, but I'm willing to fight it. Willing to take 386 seconds of my precious time and post something stupid about how eating rice and beans for breakfast has grown on me or why I think talking about weather is the worst conversation in the world unless there is a hurricane, mudslide or 10+ inches of snow.

I'm sure this is already too long, so I'll stop now and hope that Mazur posts something insane that makes me laugh and wish I was hanging out with people I cared out, not some jackass named Rodrigo Llantas who thinks whorehouses are cool.

    Life in a Day
I think this looks cool. If I'd lived in the First World, I'd see it.

Oscar-winning film director Kevin Macdonald's Life in a Day was born out of a unique partnership between Ridley Scott's Scott Free UK and YouTube. The film is a user-generated, feature-length documentary shot on a single day—July 24, 2010.

Enlisted to capture a moment of the day on camera, the global community responded by submitting more than 80,000 videos to YouTube. The videos contained over 4,500 hours of deeply personal, powerful moments shot by contributors from Australia to Zambia, and from the heart of bustling major cities to some of the most remote places on Earth.

Life in a Day brings together the most compelling footage from YouTube to create a 90-minute film crafted by Macdonald, executive producer Ridley Scott, producer Liza Marshall, and their teams. The film offers a unique experience that shows—with beauty, humor, and joyful honesty—what it's like to be alive on Earth today.

    Nipple Foot.
This is real, and it is called Supernumerary breast tissue.

    Discuss.
would your girlfriend/wife (were she, for the purpose of this melodrama, my girlfriend/wife) eject, annul, cease, desist, decease, lay waste, stop-short post-haste, monogamy's hectic pace--obviously past three years of relating factor in to this tragic comedy--were she to sniff the following exchange? from facebook:

    Brooke Worthington: July 7

OH MY GOSH! Where have you been?? how are you?!!

    Marc Miller: July 9

middle east(military), now back at tcu/ftw... gettin some stuff done. how you doin?

    Brooke Worthington: July 14

We should do lunch and catch up!

    Marc Miller: July 14

    Brooke Worthington: July 15

    added variables for kevin:
    1) her current boyfriend is a defensive lineman/deep snapper for the cowboys, a canadian fella named "LP".
    2) and for those that remember brooke, well...
    3) random poll: is my above communique an open-ended attempt at dragon-slaying bw?

i am morpheus' quixotic camel, and the above is the straw that broke my back. well.. that, piled on with all the other shit.

two broken steel supported legs, two enormous hearts, trustless and tepid, too littled too lated. one average penis, one tempestuous lesson-filled love-affair, thrust aside, now three years later... and i dont know whether im confused, exhausted, or drowning in caustic relief(hers/mine?). as non omnis moriar and all's for the best. she was a great one, graceful and cunning, breezy and numbing, she just so plainly, not for an ass is as me.

    was i killing her slowly?

i wouldve asked her to accept me wholly this november. around thanksgiving. she seemed like worth fighting.

    love is real.

grit is real too. and in my himmhawing lay love not worth prizing.

boy seeks tenacity, exclusion from tucked-tail dependency, seeks balanced deficiency. seeks somewhat crazy. seeks harlot and lady.

no more week-long we break we. no more curses from folly. no more ask if we happy.

tearfully, there will always be, sweet monika marie.

Katie and I met Coach Dougherty at the Houston Airport one time while the team was traveling for a preseason game. He was one of the nicest people I think I have ever met. We ran into him again at a football game about a year later and he actually remembered us from the airport and spoke to us again. I know a lot of Horned Frog alumni were not fond of him during his brief coaching period at TCU, but I always appreciated his sincerity as a human.

    VIVA LA PLAGA

Did anyone watch the U.S.-Mexico Gold Cup Final on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl? I did, with my Dad, in Texas, USA on Univision in Espanol (ESPN was showing race car highlights).

We listened to commentary of former US player Marcelo Balboa as a commentator (with his Argentine accent), cringed every time Mexican fans yelled "PUTO!" when US keeper Tim Howard took a goal kick, and talked about how much it sucked to watch the Rose Bowl - a slice of Americana, historic college football games and 4th of July celebrations - fill with 80,000 Mexican fans out of 93,000 in attendance.

This was a tournament final in the US of A with the US of A national team playing, yet the game turned into a Mexican home game. Unsurprisingly, Mexico, which is the better team, won 4-2. The trophy celebration was held in Spanish and after the game Howard said:

"CONCACAF should be ashamed of themselves. I think it was a fucking disgrace that the entire postmatch ceremony was in Spanish. You can bet your ass that if we were in Mexico City, it wouldn't be all in English."
    http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/soccer/news/story?id=6705473

Bill Plaschke (Around the Horn) wrote a column called "Red, White and Booo" about the fans at the game.
    http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0626-plaschke-gold-cup-20110626,0,7072114.column

My question is: Where else in the world would this happen? What other national team in the world is Booed on their home turf by an overwhelming majority of opposing fans?

I've tried to answer this. I've looked up immigration stats and tried to think of other scenarios. For certain events, there'd probably be a lot of Turkish fans at a game in Germany, Ukranian fans in Russia or Bangladeshis in attendence in India (perhaps for cricket). But it doesn't compare. We are the porous borders "Come one, come all" capital of the world.

And watching the Gold Cup final on Saturday night, I suddenly became pissed off, xenophobic and Arizonian. Home for 10 days and watching the news about unemployment, the economy, the 2012 elections, etc, and then Saturday night decidely thinking "Immigration IS a problem". Nowhere in the world do immigrants enter a country to suckle at a Teet more than they do on Uncle Sam's. Trust me, I live in Central America, which is essentially an udder from the US that everyone is trying to nurse from (see foreign investment, the Panama Canal and banana republics)

This is long, yes, I know.

I titled this "Viva La Plaga" because, as a joke, Gringos living in Central and South America are known as "La Plaga" or "the plague" because we infiltrate these countries with young drunken tourists, shitty Spanish and entitled mannerisms.

Well, at least we don't call your goalkeeper a "Bitch" every time he takes a goal kick on his home field. I'd like to think we have a little more class than that.

Can we agree to a #1 blade on the top and sides? Or should Faust have to do the zero blade as seen below in Timmy Tebow? Who is going to have the clippers? Miller? Will Piper be present? Will Adam still be married after next weekend?

    Eye Think...
In honor of DeShawn Stevenson's increasingly cliched 3-point celebration, eye present the following.

Eye think... Game 4 is the biggest game in Mavs franchise history

Eye think... Game 3 already was

Eye think... Dirk Nowitzki is currently the best player in the NBA

Eye think... He will never be remembered as an all-time great if the Mavs don't win this series

Eye think... Dwayne Wade is too good too hate, and eye would like to hate him

Eye think... JeBron Lames isn't as good as he thinks, and is therefore highly hateable

Eye think... The Mavs have adopted the US national soccer team's approach to fall behind early, make cool comebacks later

Eye think... that stategy often falls short

Eye think... The key to the Mavs success depends Shawn Marion and Peja Stoijavajcicjic, who apparently decided to go back to Serbia after lighting up LA

Eye think... Mario Chalmers is a nice player

Eye think... Chris Bosh is a Jaberwocky

Eye think... that my polite removal from a Nicaraguan restaurant after punching a chair at the end of game 3 was justified

Eye think... Nicaragua should change the nation's name to "Everything costs a dollar"

Eye think... Eye'm going to bed and will pray for the Mavs, as well as poor people and Marc Miller

Some predictions for this round of the playoffs
Did everyone see this dunk yesterday? Oh my poopoo. I think I love to watch Dwyane Wade get humiliated in his hometown by Taj Gibson.

Also, is it just me or did it seem that when the Heat beat the the Celtics, they acted like they'd won the championship? LeBron and DWade hugging, elation, confetti, etc.

I enjoyed watching the Bulls beat the crap out them yesterday and I hope they win the series. I also hope JeBron Lames never wins a title.

Predictions for the next 2 weeks:

    * Wade gets a flagrant foul and mildly injures a Bull player, perhaps the great Taj. Four minutes later, Wade's childhood home in southside Chicago is shot at, even though he hasn't lived there for 8 years.

    * The Heat start blaming Chris Bosh, even though he scored 30 yesterday. Can't be Bron's or DWade's fault.

    * Mike Bibby actually disappears on the court, a la Marty McFly's Back to the Future family photo.

    * Derrick Rose dunks on Wade and the Sears Tower falls, only to land on Michael Jordan's United Center statue, which keeps it from hitting the ground. No injuries are reported.

    * Joakim Noah tries to eat Mario Chalmers.

    Other series:

    * Mavs win game 1, it is because they were rested. Mavs lose game 1, "they were rusty". Somewhere both those headlines have already been written with fake quotes waiting to be published.

    * Ibaka hurts his hand slapping the JumboTron on a jumpball. Cuban asks for him to be fined.

    * DeShawn Stevenson begins celebrating 3-pointers made in warm-ups.

    * Russell Westbrook records 4 assists/game to himself.

    * Everybody on Earth talks about TX-Oklahoma Red River Shootout Part Deux. Yeeehaw!!

    * James Hardin announces that he is actually a gay fish.

    * Kendrick Perkins gets two fouls at halftime, putting Dallas in a one-in-one situation before the second half begins.

    * Jason Kidd named GQ's Weirdest Looking Man Alive contest.

    I love the NBA.

Are the Mavs the favorites for the NBA Title?
Obviously, I am not the fairest judge of how good the Mavs really are- but I think this is the best team in this mediocre franchises history.  I'd love to hear how others feel about the Mavericks dismantling of the champs, and their chances going forward.

I need to be held accountable.  I need support as well.  I feel like I sound like a puss writing all of this stuff, but I don't care, it's time to quit for good.

    Peace.

Dear IC, I would like to cordially invite you all to LouFest this summer in St. Louis. It is held in Forest Park, which is about 2 blocks from my dojo. This is not some lame MN camping invite that turns to vapor, but instead a true event that will live in our hearts and minds for years to come. It is a two day event August 27-28 and is only $64 for a 2 day pass. Come, join me, won't you? Lineup includes:

THE ROOTS + TV ON THE RADIO
    CAT POWER + DEERHUNTER + !!!
THE HOLD STEADY + SURFER BLOOD
DOM + DAS RACIST + THE LOW ANTHEM + KINGS GO FORTH
LOST IN THE TREES + UME + SLEEPY SUN + TROUBADOUR DALI
JUMBLING TOWERS + OLD LIGHTS + JON HARDY & THE PUBLIC

NOTE: If you dont come, you are a homo.

So, there is talk that the Bengals like Dalton at the top of the 2nd round. With Carson Palmer saying he will never play another snap for the Bengals, there is a good chance Andy could be under center when this lockout ends. The question is whether that locker room will be accepting of a right wing, Christian, ginger. I am going to guess it isnt the best fit. Thoughts?

    Rosebud?

I went to Espn.com today, which is an internet website that dubs itself the "worldwide leader in sports", and looked at the NBA standings.

I have to admit I WOL'ed (wowed out loud) to see that the Chicago Bulls are in first place in the East. If they win 7 of their last 10 they will win 60 games. How on Earth has this happened? Is Derrick Rose the best player in the National Basketball Association? If so, that is awesome. I bet it would be fun to be in Chicago right now. Costa Rica doesn't have much of a basketball league.

What is going to happen in the playoffs? Predictions? Kevin, do you think the Mavericks will win it all? You sent me an email a few weeks ago telling me that you thought that would happen.

    The Final Countdown

This is my second 30-year old post, yes I know. Maybe pyschologically I am expecting some seismic mental shift where my youth evaporates and I lose all interest in things like bad drunken hip-hop dancing (see NYEve) or smoking schwag on a Saturday night at the beach. Probably not.

Anyhow, I recently thought about where I was for each birthday during my 20th decade. They are as follows:

20th: Acapulco, Mexico, spring break Soph. year. Got drunk and obnoxious. Matt Lopez pushed me into a wall. Made out with a Chi-O at a ridiculous spring break club.

21st: Day after spring break, living in West Lowden. Brown, Mazur, Portillo and I think Lund went with me to The Library. I got drunk. Then high. Then passed out and didn't go to classes the next day.

22nd: Had two tests that I "stressed" about (probably pretty important material). Hot SMU girlfriend brought me Chick-Fil-A from Dallas. Studied that night for test the next day, which was also most likely very important material.

23rd: Portillo, Faust and I celebrated in Weiss's and Bear's house on Lubbock while they were out of town for college spring break. Portillo broke in. We drank, got high, played foosball and went to the Oui.

24th: While everyone was at Lubahn's bachelor party, I was at my cousin's wedding at DisneyWorld. Cousin arrived to wedding in Cinderella carriage and the Mickey Mouse song played at reception. Great times.

25th: Living in Memphis, came home to Dallas and went to a party with TCU soccer friends. I scolded them most of the night about not caring enough about poor people (I was sooo enlightened). Met up with Faust. Went to party. Ended up on Faust's couch with mammoth boobed girl. PG-13 events ensued.

26th: Chicago. Woke up to find car window had been smashed, running shoes gone. Taught some orphans had to dominate life just like I was. Came home to meal cooked by Melissa Fink.

27th: Hated my roommates. Detested them. However, on 27th birthday, went with one of them to check out local bars we'd never been to. I picked a spot where there was one guy on the bar passed out. We left. He took me to an unknown place that turned out to be an amazing Brazilian bar with 61 hot latinas and samba music. French kissed a latina who also had a March 18th birthday. Only day I ever liked my roommate.

28th: Wasn't drinking for Lent (after Faust's wedding). Ate Peruvian dinner with friends from work and went home early. Not drinking is lame.

29th: Brown came to visit Costa Rica. Took bus to coast, rented bikes, drank all day by the beach and hung out with two Danish girls at a bar with live Calypso music. Girls came back to our hostel to smoke ganja except all I had were pencil shavings. They went home disappointed, Brown laughed at me while I passed out.

30th:?? Who knows. Trying not to tell anyone so all my non-friends here will leave me alone. Might go roller skating with girlfriend.

    Most common Birthday denominator: Drinking

2nd Most: Friends on this blog

I can only hope that trend continues.

    * Last thought. Recently read the following in Esquire's "What I've Learned" interview with Aaron Sorkin, who wrote A Few Good Men and the Social Network (I believe I bashed him about a month ago).

"There are signposts along the way of getting older. The first is when the Playmate of the Year is younger than you are. Suddenly, you're starting to feel dirty because you are 23 and she's 19 and you really shouldn't be looking at that picture."
"The next thing that happens is professional athletes are younger than you are."
"Then Coaches and Managers are younger than you are."
"And finally, the last one that happens: You're the same age as the President of the US."

    Good luck this decade friends.

I found out today that my car only has few months to live.  I love my 1997 4Runner, but it is time for me to begin to look for my next ride.  Pipes has a Jeta, so I think I am going to need to go SUV.  I have a big dog and a big ego.

Here are some of my initial thoughts.  I would like to hear what you guys thinks.

    Toyota 4Runner-

    - Time for something different?

    Subaru Outback
+ Dependable (Subaru's rank 2nd in overall best quality automobile in 2011), Also pretty indie rock
    - Potentially too indie rock.
